In a significant development during the ongoing Test series between India and England, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has handed down a penalty to Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah for inappropriate physical contact with England batter Ollie Pope during the recently-concluded Hyderabad Test.

Jasprit Bumrah deliberately stepped in Ollie Pope’s way

In the 81st over of England’s second innings, following the completion of his follow-through, Bumrah intentionally obstructed Pope’s path as the batter attempted to go for a run. This resulted in a collision and deemed inappropriate physical contact between the two players.

After careful consideration, the ICC decided to take disciplinary action against Bumrah.

Bumrah was found to have violated Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which pertains to “inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee, or any other person (including a spectator during an International Match).”

Furthermore, a demerit point has been assigned to Bumrah’s disciplinary record, marking his first offense within a 24-month period.

Acknowledging the infraction, Bumrah admitted to the offence and agreed to the proposed sanction by Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees. Consequently, a formal hearing was deemed unnecessary.
