Ahead of the IPL auction 2024, held in Dubai on December 19, a significant transfer occurred that captured the attention of cricket enthusiasts worldwide. The surprising move involved Hardik Pandya, the then captain of Gujarat Titans, transferring back to his former team, Mumbai Indians. The all-rounder previously led the Titans to a triumphant title win in their inaugural season (2022) and a memorable final showdown in IPL 2023. The transfer stirred widespread speculation and discussion within the cricketing community.

Amidst these developments, star Indian pacer Mohammed Shami, who also dons the Titans’ colours in the cricketing carnival, shared his perspective on the matter. Additionally, he offered his thoughts on the newly appointed captain, Shubman Gill, who has been bestowed with leadership responsibilities of Titans in the wake of Hardik’s departure.

Mohammed Shami on Hardik Pandya

Shami provided a straightforward perspective on Hardik’s move to MI, stating that the team isn’t overly concerned about players leaving. He acknowledged Hardik’s captaincy achievements with the Titans, highlighting their successful performances, including reaching the final twice and winning the title once. The seamer also emphasized that players aren’t bound to a franchise for a lifetime, indicating a pragmatic approach to player transfers.

“Kiso ko kisi Kai Jane Sai koyi farak nahi padta. (No one cares about anyone – Hardik Pandya leaving Gujarat Titans). Hardik wanted to leave and he left. He did well as a captain as Gujarat made it to the final twice and also won the title once. He wasn’t tied up to Gujarat for lifetime,” Shami said on Sports 24.

Mohammed Shami on Shubman Gill

Opening on Gill’s captaincy stint and future with the franchise, Shami expressed that as Gill gains experience, he may play for another team. He acknowledged the inevitability of players exploring different opportunities, emphasizing that it’s a natural aspect of the game and can’t be prevented.

“Shubman Gill will also become experience and there is a possibility of him playing for another franchise in the future. You can’t stop anyone as it is part and parcel of the game,” the 33-year-old added.
