In the match 24 of SA20 2024, Durban Super Giants secured a thrilling victory over Pretoria Capitals by a margin of eight runs on Tuesday, January 30.

Durban Super Giants set challenging target with Matthew Breetzke’s heroics

Choosing to bat first after winning the toss, the Super Giants embarked on their innings with a forceful performance. Matthew Breetzke spearheaded the charge with a commanding 73 runs innings, well-supported by Quinton de Kock‘s quickfire 16 off 7 balls.

Despite facing initial setbacks, Heinrich Klaasen, occupying the No. 4 position, showcased his batting prowess with a scintillating 30-run innings in just 18 balls. JJ Smuts, remaining unbeaten at 21, along with Naveen-ul-Haq‘s brisk cameo of 10 runs off 3 balls, propelled the Giants to set a challenging total of 174/9.

Senuran Muthusamy and Daryn Dupavillon both exhibited an impressive performance, each securing a three-wicket haul for the Capitals. Adil Rashid and Wayne Parnell contributed with a wicket apiece.

In response, after losing a couple of wickets in the powerplay, Will Jacks displayed resilience, crafting a crucial 41 runs innings. His notable performance included five fours and two maximums, with the second maximum standing out as the most significant hit of the SA20 2024 season, covering an impressive distance of 108 meters.

In a noteworthy instance during the Capitals’ chase, on the first ball of the seventh over, bowled short down the leg-side at pace by Keemo Paul, Jacks executed a swivel and effortlessly smacked the ball over backward square leg. The ball soared straight into the branches of a tree, showcasing the power and precision of Jacks’ shot.

Capitals falter in a nail-biter against Giants

Despite that firecracker of Jacks not being enough for Capitals to win, as no other batter could reach the 20 runs mark. Junior Dala, the medium pacer for the Giants, wreaked havoc in his four-over spell, dismantling half of the Capitals’ batting order. Wiaan Mulder, Naveen and Noor Ahmed also chipped in with a wicket each. While Captain Keshav Maharaj and Paul remained wicketless, the Capitals fell eight runs short of the target.
